Sea-level rise stabilized about 3,000 years ago. The proximity of the New Jersey shoreline to the large urban population centers of New York City and Philadelphia provided the stimulus for further intensification of development. New Jersey barriers were highly mobile prior to human development, especially adjacent to inlets. Running north to south they are Bribie Island, Moreton Island, North Stradbroke Island and South Stradbroke Island (the last two used to be a single island until a storm created a channel between them in 1896). The berm is also found here which marks the boundary between the foreshore and backshore. They form nearly the entire eastern coastline of Florida, part of the western coastline between Cape Romano and St. Petersburg, and most of the Florida panhandle westward to the Mississippi Delta. Major storms have periodically eroded these beaches and destroyed or damaged buildings, support infrastructure, and protection structures, but post-storm reconstruction efforts have rebuilt these facilities, usually to larger proportions. This process of diminishing size often leads to the following sequence of morphological evolution: (1) ebb-tidal delta collapse onto the downdrift beach (Figure 41(c)), (2) development of a wide downdrift beach for a short time period (Figure 41(d)), and (3) subsequent severe erosion of the downdrift beach (Figure 41(e)). The Johns Pass (JP)Blind Pass (BP) system (Figure 36(c)) is an excellent example of multi-inlet morphodynamics (Wang et al., 2011; Wang and Beck, 2012). No single theory can explain the development of all barriers, which are distributed extensively along the world's coastlines. In addition to tide and wave actions, development of barrier islands is also affected by other processes (e.g., stochastic extreme events, sea-level change, tectonic movements, and fluvial input). Presently, Johns Pass delivers about 80% of the tidal prism, and Blind Pass only 20%. The modern (Holocene) Georgia coast is bordered by a series of relatively short, wide barrier islands separated by relatively deep tidal inlets, or sounds. As erosion and weathering attacked the Appalachians, gravel, sand, and mud flowed down their eastern slopes to blanket and bury the bedrock topography of the East Coast, creating a broad apron of deep soils and sediments called the Atlantic Coastal Plain. The only process that widened the barrier beyond the critical width was breaching, formation of a partially subaerial flood shoal, and subsequent inlet closure. A good example is found at Miramichi Bay, New Brunswick, where Portage Island as well as Fox Island and Hay Island protect the inner bay from storms in the Gulf of Saint Lawrence. Scientists estimate that there are more than 2,100 barrier islands in the world fronting nearly 10 percent of continental shorelines.
